***IMPORTANT: Do not register for a course unless formally appointed by TASA Minor Hockey to the position of Coach, Instructor, or Trainer, as these are potential costs to TASA Minor Hockey. Anyone registering for courses before formally appointed will be responsible for the course's cost.

It is strongly recommended you contact the Certification Coordinator Ron Jewers at certification@tasa.ca for assistance. Your team manager will be informed of the requirements you will need.
FIRST STEP- Hockey Canada Registry 3.0
Hockey Canada Registry, Hockey Canada’s national platform and hockey’s most extensive database for managing participant registration, team management, qualification tracking and much more. The Registry is the primary hub for all hockey-related information and activities throughout Canada.
For NEW COACHES/Managers/trainers'/ safety reps- Creating a Hockey Registry 3 account -
The easiest process we have determined is to start the setup of the first course Respect in Sport for Activity Leaders and it will help set up the Hockey Re account for you in the process

Check your Hockey CANADA Registry 3 Learning ACCOUNT for past courses acquired at the link below to register for coaching courses. You can also register for all courses required at the link below
IMPORTANT CHANGES: for 24-25
HOCKEY CANADA LEARNING LAB LAUNCHED: Hockey Canada has launched the brand-new Hockey Canada Learning Lab that will replace Hockey University this season. The new Hockey Canada Learning Lab will include modernized course content and accessibility features.
This change will make things easier for our volunteer coaches as many of our coach clinics will move exclusively online, including the new Coach 1 and Coach 2 clinics.
COACH 1 AND COACH 2 CLINICS NOW OFFERED: This season, the clinic formerly known as Intro to Coach, as well as HU Online 1/2 (which was a prerequisite for Intro to Coach), have been replaced by Coach 1 and Coach 2 but still will be honored to use in all levels of hockey at TASA. Coach Development 1 course will no longer be required by Tasa Coaching staff.
New Coaching Requirements
U7/U9 require Coach 1 (ex Intro to Coach Program can still be used to equal Coach 1)
U11/13/15/18/21 All Divisions require Coach 2 (Coach Development 1 and or Intro to Coach program can still be used to equal the new Coach 2)
There will no longer be any Team Safety reps required.
Hockey Canada Safety Course and Emergency First Aid- CPR (Level C) AED team requirements
U7/U9: At least one on-ice team volunteer is required to have the HU-Online Safety Program and Emergency First Aid, CPR (Level C), and AED certification. This volunteer must always be on the ice and present for all team events and activities.
All Other Minor, Female, Junior, and Elite Levels: All team volunteers (including MANAGER) (excluding Dressing Room Supervisors) are required to have the HU-Online Safety Program. At least one (1) team volunteer is required to have Emergency First Aid, CPR (Level C), and AED certification. This volunteer must be present for all on- and off-ice team events and activities.

Courses and Clinic information and Registration Procedures
Hockey NS Coach Certification, what do I need?
U7 - All on ice instructors/coaches/assistants must complete the Coach 1 program along with the Risk Management screening and Respect in Sport (or Speak Out) At least one instructor must have Hockey Canada Safety (HCSP1) and Emergency First Aid, CPR (Level C), and AED certification.
U9 - All coaches/assistants at all Novice levels, Development, Intermediate and Advancing, must complete the Coach 1 program along with the Risk Management screening and Respect in Sport (or Speak Out). At least one bench staff member must have Hockey Canada Safety (HCSP1) and Emergency First Aid, CPR (Level C), and AED certification.
U11/U13/U15/U18/U21 ALL Divisions- All coaches/assistants must acquire the Coach 2 program (ex-course NCCP Dev 1 can be used as well) along with the Risk Management screening and Respect in Sport (or Speak Out) and all staff must complete the Hockey Canada Safety Program (HCSP1) including the Manger and Safety Rep. One member of the coaching staff must acquire Emergency First Aid, CPR (Level C), and AED certification.
Managers/Trainer only - For all levels require the Respect in sport bench staff course, The Criminal Record/ Vulnerable Sector check and the Hockey Canada Safety Program (HCSP1).

Course Information and Payment and reimbursement
HSP Safety Level 1 is an online course only. The course can also be renewed via online study as the course is good for 3 years thus it does expire. You will need to purchase the course. Once you have completed the course, please Email the receipt to Ron at certfication@tasa.ca and I will contact our finance VP to reimburse.
Coach 1 and Coach 2 programs are online courses only with Hockey NS. You will need to purchase the course. Once you have completed the course, please Email the receipt to Ron at certfication@tasa.ca and I will contact our finance VP to reimburse.
HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR CERTIFICATION for completing the Emergency First Aid, CPR (Level C), and AED certification
All Emergency First Aid, CPR (Level C), and AED certificates must be sent to info@hockeynovascotia.ca. In your email, please include your full name, hockey association, and date of birth.
Special Circumstances-FAQ
In TASA - Our trainers are registered also as an Assistant Coach in a dual position. If by chance you are considered as just the trainer (on rare occasion in TASA) then the Hockey NS definition of a Trainer ONLY is as follows:
“A person who is on the bench during the games to attend to any injuries. This person is on the bench or in the rink during practices as well - but does not go on the ice at all to help with any practices”
You will then require the HCSP Level 1 course/Risk management screening, Respect in Sport (or Speak out) and acquire Emergency First Aid, CPR (Level C), and AED certification
Grandfather Clause for Coach Courses
NOTE: For the NCCP Dev1 and Coach Development 1-, coaches who have previously been certified in either the NCCP Coach, NCCP Intermediate and Coach Development 1 levels are not required to take the new Coach 1/Coach 2 program. They will be eligible to coach at any level and position with what they have.
If you are a FIRST RESPONDER (e.g., Doctor/Nurse/Paramedic/ Firefighter etc.):
All medically trained professionals must take the HSP Level 1 Course if required above. The reason is it deals with rink safety, hockey equipment fitting and various other non-first aid topics that are specific to hockey.
There are no exceptions to the certification requirements and the staff courses required must be present in your Ehockey Hockey Canada account before Dec 1, 2024 in most cases. It is the responsibility of the coach and his/her Minor Hockey Association to ensure all requirements are met.

PLEASE NOTE:
Nov 30/24 deadline (if you do not meet the deadline you have to suspend your duties until you meet the requirements)
Coach 1 online must be completed by Nov 30, 2024 (if available).
Coach 2 -must be completed by Nov 30, 2024.
Hockey NS Definitions:
Coach or Assistant Coach - A person who is both on the bench during games and is on the ice during practices
Manager - A person who volunteers to help out a team with booking ice time, submitting tournament applications and making travel plans, coordinates team budgets and fundraising events. This person does not go on the bench during games and does not go on the ice during practice.

Risk Management Screening, who needs what?

What is Risk Management Screening?
All volunteers at all levels - Regardless of your volunteer position (e.g., coach, assistant coach, trainer or manager), all volunteers registered with any minor hockey team or association must complete the HNS Risk Management screening process of Criminal Records and Vulnerable Sector check. (A complete screening policy and process can be found under the Risk Management TASA tab). Criminal Records/ Vulnerable Sector checks must be resubmitted every 3 years.
All volunteers at all levels - Regardless of your volunteer position (e.g., coach, assistant coach, trainer or manager), all volunteers registered with any minor hockey team or association must have completed the Speakout course (no longer available) or take the Respect in Sport (RIS) Bench Staff program. This is an online course, and the individual covers the cost and or the fundraising from team, which is approximately $30.00 +HST. See the Respect in Sport STAFF link in the Risk Management TAB on the TASA website for completion instructions.
Please note that the Respect in Sport (RIS) Bench staff is a different and separate course from the Respect in Sport
